United are at the beginning of a new era following the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Jose Mourinho’s interim replacement.
And although most of Old Trafford chiefs’ time is being spent on finding a permanent successor, transfers are still on their mind.
Manchester United have the opportunity to strengthen their squad this month in a bid to aid their push for a spot in the top four.
And Ndombele is said to be in their sights after he emerged as one of the most promising prospects in Ligue 1.
According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web, United face stiff competition for Ndombele’s signature.
And they will not find it easy to convince Lyon to strike a deal for the midfielder either.
United might have to fight off Barcelona and Inter Milan if Ed Woodward makes an offer for Ndombele in January.
Barcelona are always on the lookout for players who can help them stay on top in Spain.
While Italian giants Inter Milan have cash to splash as they seek to return to the heights of old.
Lyon will drive a hard bargain if any of the trio come calling for Ndombele during the winter transfer window.
Lyon have apparently valued the 22-year-old at a whopping £72m (€80m) amid the interest.
And that is substantially more than the £54m (€60m) Inter are thought to have had in mind.
United and Barcelona, too, are reluctant to satisfy Lyon’s demands at this stage.
But that stance may change if the clubs’ needs change and as the deadline gets closer.
Meanwhile, Express Sport understands Manchester City are admirers of Ndombele.
Manager Pep Guardiola ordered scouts to make checks on the France international earlier this season.
